Tucked far away from the hustle and bustle of modernity, Wilderness Bay Lodge certainly lives up to its name. Accessible only by water (the owners pick up guests on a pontoon boat), Wilderness Bay Lodge started out back in the 1930s as Tom's Rest Haven.

Owner Lee Hotaling bought the resort in 1970 and has run it with his family ever since. Their nine housekeeping cabins provide the basic conveniences of home in an environment that could hardly be more serene. A Ford Model A pickup still putts around the resort, hauling wood and gravel.

Wilderness Bay Lodge sits on Snowbank Lake, the northeast portion of which is in the BWCA. Snowbank is a 4,273 acre lake with a depth of 150 feet and superb clarity of 23 feet. It supports lake trout, burbot, walleye, and northern pike.
